Bollywood megastar Akshay Kumar is set to star in a forthcoming film named” Mission Raniganj”, which is an homage to the real-life idol Jaswant Singh Gill. Gill was a mining mastermind who led the successful deliverance of 65 miners from a collapsed coal mine in Raniganj, West Bengal, in 1989.
The film is directed by Tinu Suresh Desai and produced by Pooja Entertainment. It’s listed to be released on October 6, 2023.
In addition to Kumar, the film also stars Parineeti Chopra, Rajesh Sharma, and Jackky Bhagnani.
The Story of Jaswant Singh Gill
Jaswant Singh Gill was born in a small village in Punjab in 1936. He studied mining engineering at the Indian School of Mines in Dhanbad, Jharkhand.
After completing his studies, Gill joined Coal India Limited( CIL) as a mining mastermind. He was posted to the Raniganj coalfields in West Bengal in 1989.
On December 13, 1989, a coal mine in Raniganj collapsed, enmeshing 65 miners outside. Gill was one of the first askers to arrive at the scene. He incontinently began to assess the situation and plan a deliverance operation.
The deliverance operation was extremely grueling, as the mine was unstable and there was a threat of further collapse. still, Gill and his platoon worked lifelessly for 60 hours, and they ultimately managed to deliver all 65 miners.
Gill was awarded the Padma Shri, India’s fourth-loftiest mercenary honor, for his frippery and heroism. He passed away in 2019 at the age of 82.
